  1.             A REVIEW of the STAR NX-1000 COLOUR PRINTER

  7.             About five months ago Star released in Australia the NX-1000
  8.  series of quality nine pin dot matrix printers. After initial shortages
  9.  they are now readily available in most computer shops. Recommended retail
  10.  price is $599 for the standard model, but for an extra $100 you can
  11.  have the additional feature of COLOUR. For an Amiga owner, the colour
  12.  version is the only way to go. [Note that the standard model CANNOT be
  13.  upgraded to colour later.] The recommended retail prices are most
  14.  definitely n egotiable, as I've seen the NX1000-COLOUR advertised
  15.  for $556, including cable.
  16.  
  17.            The Star company has built up a commendable reputation for
  18.  producing good quality but moderately priced Epson clone printers,
  19.  notably the Star Gemini and the Star NX10. The NX-1000 series follows the
  20.  same traditions but with the addition of colour, and a few other features
  21.  that makes the printer a worthy successor to the NX10.

  23.            The printer's main features are:-

  25. 1. Built-in Fonts.
  26.    The printer has 1 draft and 4 NLQ fonts. The four NLQ fonts are
  27.  Courier, Sanserif, Orator with small capitals, and Orator with lower
  28.  case. All fonts can be selected as standard or italic.

  30. 2. Speed.
  31.    30 cps in NLQ mode is pretty good, and 120 cps in draft is fast enough
  32.  for me.

  34. 3. Print Pitch.
  35.    The usual offering of Pica (10 cpi), Elite (12 cpi), Condensed Pica (17
  36.  cpi), Condensed Elite (20 cpi), Proportional Pica and Proportional Elite.

  38. 4. Paper Parking.
  39.    Paper parking is a neat system for quickly changing from the the usual
  40.  fanfold paper (used say, for drafting a letter), to single sheet
  41.  operation (perhaps an embossed letter-head sheet for a NLQ final copy),
  42.  then back again to fanfold paper.
  43.    A few simple controls rewinds the continuous paper, and when a single
  44.  sheet in dropped down the paper guide, an automatic feed activates to
  45.  advance the sheet to top of form ready for printing. When fanfold paper
  46.  is again required, the printer simply activates the sprocket feed to
  47.  advance the fanfold paper, and it's ready for printing again.
  48.   This system avoids the usual problems associated with changing paper
  49.  feed methods.

  51. 5. Soft Touch Control Panel.
  52.    The four, coloured, soft touch controls on the front of the printer,
  53.  together with the front mounted ON/OFF switch, gives the operator
  54.  flexible control over most of the printer's functions. These include:
  55.                *short self test and long self test
  56.                *set draft or one of four NLQ typestyles, standard
  57.                or italic
  58.                *set the print pitch
  59.                *generate a hexidecimal dump of all data being
  60.                 sent to the printer by the computer
  61.                *line and page feeds
  62.                *forward and reverse microfeed
  63.                *set top of form
  64.                *clear the buffer
  65.                *set left and right margins.

  67. 6. Print Buffer
  68.    An 8K buffer giving faster and smoother graphics printing  comes as
  69.  standard.

  71. 7. Colour text printing.
  72.    Standard text can be printed in black, red, blue, violet, yellow,
  73.  orange and green.

  75. 8. Printer Control Codes
  76.    If your word processor doesn't support printing in red or purple (few
  77.  do) or printing in double high and or double wide text (the NX1000  can)
  78.  then you couldn't do it without a great deal of bother. The clever people
  79.  who developed the NX1000 devised printer control codes using the format
  80.  "((X))n", which is typed directly into the text of the word processor.
  81.  The printer recognizes the combination of characters as a print control
  82.  code and executes a change in font, colour, text size, bold or italic as
  83.  ordered. Very neat!!

  85. 9. The Manual.
  86.    A comprehensive spiral bound manual with a fold out reference card
  87.  fully explain all the printer's features. There is also a  handy User's
  88.  Guide to keep on the desk.

  90. 10. Ribbons.
  91.    Black ribbons cost around $12 and Colour ribbons around $24, so they
  92.  are not very expensive and they last a lot longer than ribbons for
  93.  thermal  printers.

  95. 11. Preferences.
  96.    The printer is Epson compatible so under Workbench 1.2 select the
  97.  "Epson JX_80" and under the new 1.3 Workbench use the "EpsonX" printer
  98.  driver and the new PRINTER.DEVICE.

  100. 12 Graphics and Colour.
  101.    Colour printouts from Deluxe Paint, ProWrite 2 etc take longer to
  102.  produce than black and white because the print head needs four passes on
  103.  the one line, printing yellow, red, blue and finally black, to produce
  104.  all of the possible 4096 colours available. The new Workbench 1.3 is
  105.  highly recommended for both the dramatic increase in speed of graphics
  106.  printing as well as the additional graphics features available in
  107.  preferences.

  110.        The STAR NX-1000 COLOUR printer is a quality product with many
  111.  useful features and at a price that makes it almost impossible to resist.
  112.  For a first printer, or as an update for an ageing printer, I can
  113.  recommend without reservation, this robust and clever printer.
